Who is authorised to witness me signing the statutory declaration?

You need to sign your statutory declaration in front of one of the people listed below. They also need to sign your statutory declaration and state the position they have that authorises them to witness your declaration.

In New Zealand, these people can witness and sign your statutory declaration:

• Justice of the Peace (JP) – Find a JP
• barrister or solicitor – Find a lawyer
• notary public – Find a notary public
• Registrar or Deputy Registrar of the District Court or the High Court – Find a District Court or High Court.

Outside New Zealand, these people can witness and sign your statutory declaration:

• judge
• notary public
• representative at a New Zealand Embassy
• Commonwealth representative at an embassy
• Justice of the Peace (JP) or Commissioner of Oaths (if you’re in a Commonwealth country).
