Who is authorised to witness me signing the statutory declaration?

You need to sign your statutory declaration in front of one of the following people (note that they also need to sign your statutory declaration and state their position which authorises them to witness you making your declaration).

In New Zealand, the following people can sign your statutory declaration:

Outside New Zealand, the following people can sign your statutory declaration:

  • judge
  • notary public
  • representative at a New Zealand Embassy
  • Commonwealth representative at an embassy, or
  • if you are in a Commonwealth country, a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner of Oaths.
